Overview

About Etomon•Become an Instructor

Etomon is a virtual education platform where empower instructors to provide their unique teaching experience in a large variety of subjects. Users can become instructors by completing the onboarding process, including registration, qualification verification and course publication.

What I did

The design challenge is that the complex onboarding process involves multiple steps and can be overwhelming, especially for first-time users. I aim to improve a clear and supportive journey that guides prospective instructors of seamlessly joining the platform.

IDEATE

Insights

After I completed the previous 2 tasks, I diverted my sight from the student to the instructor's side. I went through the process of becoming an instructor to evaluate the existing features, and found the most common issues users encountered are:

  • Burdensome Process: redundant steps, but also not knowing where are in the process without a clear instructions
  • Excessive information: Struggling to complete an overwhelming amount of required forms

Workflow

I collaborated with the PM to streamline the workflow into 3 stages, including Edit Profile, Create Course and Submit.

Information Architecture

I optimized the information architecture and strike a balance between (1) verifying instructor qualifications by requesting sufficient information, and (2) avoiding the overwhelming of users with lengthy.

The first step to becoming an instructor is creating a strong and engaging profile.
  • To assist those unsure about how to craft a profile effectively, I introduced tips to guide instructors in presenting themselves as knowledgeable and approachable to their target students.
  • While I removed unnecessary steps, I also recognized that some users might be cautious about share personal information. To address this, I added clear explanations clarifing how these details building visibility and credibility with prospective students.
Create Course
Once instructors complete their profiles, they can proceed to course creation by filling in the necessary course details.
  • I improve the layout by incorporating process indicators, giving users a better sense of how many steps they’ve completed and what remains in the course creation process.
  • I also added helper text to help users understand what information needs to be filled out and to safeguard them against potential mistakes before publishing.

Follow-up Emails
Once submitted, Etomon will review instructors' applications and verify their qualifications to ensure teaching quality.
  • Afterward, Etomon will notify instructors of their status via email.
  • If instructors doesn’t receive instant approval, considering their potential frustration, the emails are designed to reassure them not to worry, also provides specific instructions on the actions required based on different statuses (E.g. pending) to undergo further review.

Video Guideline
  • Since younger users often prefer to learn about a new course by through videos, I pitched a method to help instructors to better attract new students and ​maximize enrollments by creating engaging video stories & livestreams.
  • However, many instructors, particularly beginners, lacked experience in storytelling through video and faced technical challenges with video editing. Therefore, I conducted research and then compiled a series of templates and help pages to guide them step-by-step in creating impactful videos.
  • The methods had successful outcome and were further promoted by the team.
